Find people who regulate you well and stay near them (June 2018 events)

Adults remain social animals: they continue to require a source of stabilization outside themselves. …in some important ways people cannot be stable on their own.…
Total self-sufficiency turns out to be a daydream….
Stability means finding people who regulate you well and staying near them.
– Charney et al

Hi everyone,

What are you doing on Saturday, June 16? A bunch of us are taking a day trip to visit Farm Sanctuary in Acton. If you have never been there, it is a wonderful place, so you might want to come with us.

We filled up super fast for the number of spots we reserved on the tour. If you want to come, but did not register on Eventbrite yet, let us know by adding your name to the Eventbrite Wait List. We will do our best to accommodate everyone, but that means, we need you to let us know you want to be there. Do not hesitate, carpool arrangements will be getting finalized at the end of this week. So the time to tell us you want ‘in’ is now (or very soon).

June has many additional interesting things happening, so scroll down for a few more Upcoming Community Events.

Sat May 6, 2017: “The Milk Myth” & “SEVEN”

Hi everyone,

Last week was amazing! Thank you so much to all who came out for any or all of the events, Socially Accepted Practices & Traumatic Impact on Adolescents’ Development, The 11th Annual Golden West College Peace Conference, and Crises in the Ocean: How Compassionate Action Benefits Us All (w/ People’s Climate March). Additional gratitude to the incredible speakers, volunteers and organizations that helped to make all three events possible, highly successful and well-attended.

So, what’s next?

This coming Saturday, May 6, 10:00am – 12:00pm, come join Plant Powered OC at the Whole Foods in Brea for The Milk Myth & Non-Dairy Food Sampling! In honor of May as the month of Mother’s, we will be re-thinking our relationship with milk. Plant-Based Nutrition Advisor, Gina Bonanno-Lemos, will help us understand the research that begs to differ with the dairy industry slogans, such as “Milk Does a Body Good” and the myth of ‘happy cows’. Along with some serous learning, this event is going to be super-fun! We will be sampling plant-based milks, cheeses and ice cream. For those who want to learn more about how to transition to eating more plants, here is your opportunity to taste before you buy, and learn about the differing health benefits all at the same time. Admission is free. Space is limited. Register here.

Also on Saturday, May 6, 7:00pm, SEVEN – A Documentary Play, is being hosted by Neighborhood Congregational Church Outreach in Laguna Beach. Seven is a groundbreaking work of documentary theater that captures the remarkable lives of a diverse and courageous group of global women leaders. We are grateful to the organizers at NCC; they have graciously offered to donate 50% of the proceeds to Living Ubuntu. Come out and support, if you can.

“Riveting, explosive, and inspiring drama…starkly emotive…reaffirm[s] the belief that one person could indeed make a difference.”
— Huffington Post

And, for those of you who recently heard Gene Baur speak and are now interested in visiting Farm Sanctuary, we will be headed out there on Sunday May 21st. Space is limited. If you are interested, email: info@livingubuntu.org.

See you Saturday?

Break Free, Catching the Sun, and Living Vegan “Social”

You carry Mother Earth within you. She is not outside of you. Mother Earth is not just your environment. In that insight of inter-being, it is possible to have real communication with the Earth, which is the highest form of prayer.
– Thich Nhat Hahn

Hi everyone,

Have you been following the extremely tragic wildfires in Canada? A CNN opinion piece is titled, The fire in Canada looks a lot like climate change — and that should scare you. The reality is that climate change is advancing rapidly and by no means are we doing all we could to slow it or adapt to that which is inevitable. As the 350.org campaign this week makes the case to Break Free from fossil fuels, actions are taking place all over the world in support of fast, dramatic, effective change.

(Also see: May 14 – 350.org L.A. March. I will be in Los Angeles that weekend, and I recognize the irony that I will be unable to attend the event as I am taking the Somatic Experiencing – Foundations of Disaster Response that weekend, to learn more about how to increase trauma recovery in these critical situations.)

For those of you who live near to Orange County, please come join us Tuesday, May 10, 7:30p, for the one night only screening of Catching the Sun at the Frida Cinema, scheduled to take place during the 350.org Break Free campaign. (Advance tickets.)

If Canadian wildfires aren’t a vivid enough reminder of what is at stake, last month Newsweek published, We’re Running Out of Water, and Consequences Could be Dire. Changing what we eat is the additional essential part of the equation to reduce water use and greenhouse gas emissions. For anyone interested in having a great vegan meal today, come join us today at 5:30p in Laguna Beach. Here are the details of the Living Vegan “Social”. We will walk to the beach, so come prepared for that.

Let’s do all we can to pull together on this. Too much is at stake not to. Here is one example of what can be done: San Diego Republican mayor pushes plan to run on 100% renewable energy. Continue reading
